1931: Early Specification and Differences in Description
In the Japanese catalogue Liste: Leica 31/1 of January 1931, the lens is listed as “標準鏡玉「エルマア」 1:3,5 F=50mm”. This may be translated as “Standard Lens ‘Elmar’ 1:3.5 F=50mm”. The assigned codeword is ELMAR, and the listed retail price was 80.00 Yen.
In the European catalogue List Photo 1 K engl. of November 1931, the lens is listed as “Leitz ‘Elmar’ Anastigmatic lens F/3.5, 5 cm focus with helical focusing mount”. Compared with the brief description in the Japanese catalogue, the European catalogue additionally describes the lens as an anastigmatic design and notes that it is fitted with a helical focusing mount.

同年11月の欧州向けカタログ（List Photo 1 K engl.）では「Leitz “Elmar” Anastigmatic lens F/3.5, 5 cm focus with helical focusing mount」と表記され、日本語版では焦点距離と開放値のみが記載されているのに対し、欧州版ではアナスチグマートレンズであることや、ヘリコイド付きマウントを備えることが明記されている。
1932: Introduction of Rangefinder Coupling
In the European catalogue List Photo No. 7210 of May 1932, the lens is listed as “Standard Lens ‘Elmar’ F/3.5, 5 cm. focus, with mount for automatic coupling”. The description indicates the introduction of rangefinder coupling. The assigned codeword is Elmarkup.
The suffix “kup” is believed to derive from the German word Kupplung, meaning a mechanical coupling mechanism.
In the U.S. publication Supplement to Pamphlets Nos. 1204 and 1205 of June 1932, the lens is listed as “LEITZ Anastigmat ELMAR, 50mm focus, F:3.5 (standard lens) in focusing mount”. The assigned codeword is ELMARKUP, with code number 35,691. The listed retail price was USD 36.50.

The chromium-plated version appears in the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7325. of June 1933. The standard version is listed as „ELMAR“ 5 cm 1 : 3,5 Universal-Objektiv für alle Gebiete der Amateur-Photographie, Standard-Objektiv, Fassung versenkbar. The phrase Fassung versenkbar indicates a collapsible mount. The assigned codeword for the standard version is Elmarkup.
The chromium-plated version is listed separately as Verchromt, with the assigned codeword Elmarchrom. The listed retail prices were RM 75 and RM 77 respectively.
In today’s collector market, nickel-finished examples are generally more expensive than chromium-plated examples. However, the original catalogue prices show that the chromium-plated version was slightly more expensive at the time of introduction.

1933年6月のドイツ語カタログ（Liste Photo Nr. 7325.）ではクローム仕上げが登場する。標準仕様（ニッケル仕上げ）は「„ELMAR“ 5 cm 1 : 3,5 Universal-Objektiv für alle Gebiete der Amateur-Photographie, Standard-Objektiv, Fassung versenkbar.」と表記される。ここでの「Fassung versenkbar」は沈胴式を意味する。コードワードはElmarkupである。クローム仕上げは「Verchromt」と表記され、コードワードはElmarchromである。価格はそれぞれ75RM（ライヒスマルク）と77RMであった。現在の中古市場ではニッケル仕上げの方がやや高価であるが、発売当時はクローム仕上げの方が僅かに高価であった。
1934–1935: Reorganization of the Codeword System and Regional Differences
In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7325 b. of December 1934, the codeword for the standard version was changed to Elmar, while the chromium-plated version was assigned the codeword Elmar chrom.
In contrast, the U.S. catalogue Booklet No. 1227-3rd Edition of March 1935 continued to list the standard version as ELMARKUP and the chromium-plated version as ELMAR-CHROM. This suggests that codeword practices were not standardized across all markets.
The corresponding code numbers were 50,320 for the standard version and 50,330 for the chromium-plated version. The listed retail prices were USD 49.50 and USD 51.75 respectively.
In the U.S. catalogue Booklet No. 1244 of September 1935, the lens is listed as “LEITZ Anastigmat ELMAR, 50mm focus, f:3.5 (standard lens), angle of view 48°, in focusing mount”. Only one version is listed. The assigned codeword is ELMAR, with code number 50,320.
Although the catalogue does not specify the finish, the code number corresponds to the former nickel-finished version. However, since the chromium-plated version had already been introduced in 1933, it seems unlikely that only the nickel-finished version was offered in 1935.
The German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7333 c of December 1935 continued to list both versions, with Elmar assigned to the standard version and Elmar chrom to the chromium-plated version.
Consequently, it is difficult to determine from the catalogue descriptions alone whether the ELMAR listed in the U.S. catalogue refers to the nickel-finished or chromium-plated version. Nevertheless, the latter appears more likely, suggesting that the codeword and code number may have been retained after the transition.

1935年9月の米国向けカタログ（Booklet No. 1244）では「LEITZ Anastigmat ELMAR, 50mm focus, f:3.5 (standard lens), angle of view 48°, in focusing mount」と表記されている。記載されているのは一点のみで、コードワードはELMAR、コードナンバーは50,320である。カタログには仕様（仕上げ）に関する記述は確認できないが、コードナンバーからはニッケル仕上げに対応するものと考えられる。ただし、1933年にクローム仕上げが発売されており、1935年時点でニッケル仕上げのみがカタログに掲載されていたとは考えにくい。
同年12月のドイツ向けカタログ（Liste Photo Nr. 7333 c）でも、標準仕様（ニッケル仕上げ）はElmar、verchromter（クローム仕上げ）はElmar chromのコードワードで併売されており、米国向けカタログのコードワードELMARがニッケル仕上げなのか、それともクローム仕上げなのかをカタログの記述のみで特定することは困難であるが、クローム仕上げである可能性が高く、コードワードおよびコードナンバーがそのまま引き継がれたと考えられる。
1936: Complete Transition to Chromium Finish
The last catalogue in which the former nickel-finished version can be identified is the German catalogue Liste Photo 4 K d. of August 1936.
The lens is listed as “Leitz-Elmar 5 cm 1 : 3,5. Standard-Objektiv und Universalobjektiv für alle Gebiete der Amateurphotographie, versenkbar (siehe auch Beschreibung der Leica unter „Optik“ Seite 9). Bildwinkel 47°; Gewicht 115 g.” However, the price column contains the note “Wird nur noch verchromt geliefert.” This may be translated as “Now supplied only in chromium finish”.
The codeword for the former standard version remains Elmar, while the chromium-plated version is listed as Elmar chrom. A price is provided only for the chromium-plated version, namely 67.75 Dutch guilders (Hfl. 67.75).
These records suggest that the nickel-finished version formally remained in the catalogue but had effectively been discontinued by this point.

The first post-war catalogue entry currently confirmed for the Elmar 50mm f/3.5 appears in the U.S. catalogue No. 1348, November 1948.
The lens is listed as “Elmar 50mm., F:3.5 Lens, coated, for Leica Cameras”. The assigned codeword is ELMCO, with code number 65,622.
In the subsequent U.S. catalogue No. 1348, September 1949, the same description is used. The assigned codeword was changed to ELMAR-B, while the code number remained 65,622.
These catalogue entries confirm that the lens had become available in a coated version.

1959: Last Confirmed Catalogue Appearance
According to the currently available records, the last confirmed catalogue appearance of the Elmar 50mm f/3.5 was in the U.S. catalogue No. 1397-R4 of April 1959.
The lens is listed simply as “50mm Elmar f/3.5”. The assigned codeword is ELMAR, with code number 11,010. The listed retail price was USD 51.00.
Although the Elmar 50mm f/3.5 underwent design changes following the introduction of the Leica M3 in 1954, no catalogue has yet been identified in my collection that explicitly documents those changes. Further examination of additional catalogues and brochures may provide new information in the future.

確認できる範囲では最後にカタログに掲載されたのは、1959年4月のアメリカ向けカタログ（NO. 1397-R4）である。表記は「50mm Elmar f/3.5」のみである。コードワードはELMAR、コードナンバーは11,010、価格は51.00ドルである。
1954年のライカM3発売以降にElmar 50mm f/3,5はデザインの変更を受けたが、そのことが確認できるカタログを見つけることはできなかった。今後、パンフレットの整理を行う予定であり、その過程で新たな知見が得られる可能性がある。
