Key Findings
- First confirmed catalogue appearance: September 1935.
- Introduced as Leica’s extremely wide-angle lens with a 76° angle of view.
- Nickel-finished and chrome-finished versions were offered simultaneously during the mid-1930s.
- Chrome-finished versions were identified as Hoopy chrom in some catalogues.

1935: Chromium-Finished Specification in the U.S. Market
In the U.S. catalogue Booklet No. 1244 of September 1935, the lens is listed as “LEITZ Anastigmat HEKTOR, 28mm focus, f:6.3 (extremely wide angle lens), angle of view 76°, in focusing mount”. The assigned codeword is HOOPY, with code number 50,290. The listed retail price was USD 75.00.
The catalogue illustrates Leica cameras in both black lacquer and chromium finishes. However, no information is provided regarding whether the winding knob and shutter-speed dial were finished in nickel or chromium. Consequently, it is difficult to identify the exact camera variants shown in the catalogue using modern terminology.
Leica cameras commonly referred to today as Black Paint or Semi-Chrome are described in the catalogue simply as black lacquer. A notable feature of this catalogue is that only a single lens finish is listed. In other words, the lens was apparently offered in either nickel finish or chromium finish, but not both.
At the same time, the camera bodies themselves were available in both black lacquer and chromium finishes. Since a chromium-finished body would not normally be expected to be paired with a nickel-finished lens, it appears reasonable to assume that the black lacquer camera illustrated in the catalogue corresponds to what collectors would now describe as a semi-chrome specification, while the lens itself was chromium finished.
Although the catalogue does not explicitly state this, the available evidence suggests that chromium finish had become the standard specification for the U.S. market by this time, and that the lens listed under the codeword HOOPY was the chromium-finished version.
1935年9月の米国向けカタログ(Booklet No. 1244)では「LEITZ Anastigmat HEKTOR, 28mm focus, f:6.3 (extremely wide angle lens), angle of view 76°, in focusing mount」と表記されている。
1935-1936: Nickel and Chromium Versions in the European Market
In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7333 c of December 1935, the lens is listed simply as:
Leitz=Hektor, Weitwinkelobjektiv.
This may be translated as “Leitz Hektor, wide-angle lens”.
In this catalogue, the lens name (Objektiv) and focal length (Brennweite in cm) are shown in separate columns. The assigned codeword is Hoopy, and the listed retail price was RM 95. A chromium-finished version (verchromter) is listed separately. Its assigned codeword is Hoopy chrom, and the listed retail price was RM 97.
The coexistence of nickel-finished and chromium-finished versions can still be confirmed in the European catalogue List Photo 3K en. of August 1936.
The standard version is described as:
Leitz “Hektor” F/6.3, 2.8 cm. Ultra-wide angle lens for architecture and landscapes. Image angle 76°; weight 4 ozs. The chromium-finished version is listed simply as “Chromium plated finish”.
The assigned codewords are Hoopy and Hoopy chrom respectively. The listed retail prices were £10 14s and £10 18s 6d. These catalogues indicate that the nickel-finished version remained the standard specification in the European market, while the chromium-finished version was offered as an alternative finish.
However, the German catalogue Liste Photo 4 K d. of the same month includes the note:
Wird nur noch verchromt geliefert.
This may be translated as “Supplied only in chromium finish from now on”.
Thus, although both versions still appeared in the European catalogue, the German catalogue suggests that production of the nickel-finished version was already approaching its end.
Ultra-wide angle lens for architecture and landscapes. Image angle 76° ; weight 4 ozs.」
1936-1938: Transition to Chromium Finish and Variations in Codeword Usage
In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7333 d of December 1936, the lens is listed as:
Leitz-Hektor, Weitwinkel-Objektiv.
The assigned codeword is Hoopy chrom, and the listed retail price was RM 97. Only a single version is listed, indicating that the nickel-finished version had been discontinued and that chromium finish had become the standard specification.
In the French catalogue Liste Photo 4K. fr. of November 1937, the lens is described as:
Leitz-Hektor 1 : 6,3 – 2,8 cm, objectif ultra-grand-angulaire pour l’architecture et paysage; angle de champ 76°, chromé.
This may be translated as:
Leitz-Hektor 1:6.3, 2.8 cm. Ultra-wide-angle lens for architecture and landscape photography; angle of view 76°; chromium finished.
The assigned codeword is Hoopy.
By contrast, the contemporary German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7325 g W. lists:
LEITZ-HEKTOR 2,8 cm 1 : 6,3.
This may be translated as:
LEITZ-HEKTOR 2.8 cm f/6.3. Wide-angle lens with an exceptionally large angle of view for architectural and interior photography, chromium plated.
The assigned codeword is Hoopy chrom.
Although both catalogues describe the same chromium-finished lens, the codewords differ. This suggests that codeword usage was not always completely standardized between catalogues and regions.
In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7760. of June 1938, the same lens is listed with the codeword Hoopy and a retail price of RM 97.
In the U.S. catalogue List Photo No. 7784. of October 1938, the lens is described as:
LEITZ HEKTOR 28 mm focus, f : 6.3, extra-wide-angle lens for architecture and interior photography, chromium plated.
The assigned codeword is Hoopy, with code number 50,290. The listed retail price was USD 60.00.
では「LEITZ HEKTOR 28 mm focus, f : 6.3, extra-wide-angle lens for architecture and interior photography, chromium plated.」
1939: Final Pre-War Catalogue Appearance
According to the currently available records, the final pre-war catalogue appearance of the Hektor 28mm f/6.3 is found in the U.S. catalogue BOOKLET No. 1275 of March 1939.
The lens is listed as:
LEITZ Anastigmat HEKTOR, 28mm focus, f :6.3, (extremely wide angle lens), angle of view 76°, minimum focusing distance 3.5 ft., in non-collapsible focusing mount.
The assigned codeword is HOOPY, with code number 65,600. The listed retail price was USD 69.00.
カタログでの表記は「LEITZ Anastigmat HEKTOR, 28mm focus, f :6.3, (extremely wide angle lens), angle of view 76°, minimum focusing distance 3.5 ft., in non-collapsible focusing mount」である。
1950-1953: Post-War Reintroduction and Reorganization of the Code System
The first post-war catalogue appearance currently confirmed is found in the U.S. catalogue No. 1364 of October 1950.
The lens is listed as “Hektor 28mm. f/6.3 wide angle (76°), coated lens”. This confirms the introduction of lens coating. The assigned codeword is HOOPY-B, with code number 65,605. The listed retail price was USD 112.00.
The final catalogue appearance currently confirmed is found in the U.S. catalogue No. 1382 of June 1953.
The lens is listed as:
Hektor 28mm, f/6.3, extreme wide angle lens, in non-collapsible focusing mount, angle of view 76°.
The assigned codeword is HOOPY, with code number 11,000. The listed retail price was USD 102.00.
The adoption of code number 11,000 reflects the post-war reorganization of the Leitz product numbering system, into which this lens was incorporated.
表記は「Hektor 28mm, f/6.3, extreme wide angle lens, in non-collapsible focusing mount, angle of view 76°」である。
