1933: Early Catalogue Description and the Coexistence of Rigid and Collapsible Versions

For the Summar 50mm f/2, I have attempted to reproduce the earliest catalogue description as closely as possible to the original wording.

The earliest catalogue appearance currently confirmed is found in the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7325. of June 1933. The lens appears on page 30 in the section entitled:

Die vollständige Reihe der Leica-Objektive mit Auswechselfassung und selbsttätiger Kupplung setzt sich wie folgt zusammen:

The description is given as:

„SUMMAR“ 5 cm 1 : 2 (in Vorbereitung) Ultra-lichtstarkes Universal-Objektiv, für jede Art von Kunstlicht- und Reportagephotographie ebenso hervorragend geeignet wie für die allgemeine Amateurphotographie.

This may be translated as:

Summar 5 cm f/2 (in preparation). An ultra-fast universal-purpose lens, equally well suited to all forms of artificial-light and reportage photography, as well as general amateur photography.

The designation “Fassung nicht versenkbar” refers to the rigid mount version, while “Fassung versenkbar” refers to the collapsible version. The term Verchromt indicates a chromium-plated finish.

As of June 1933, the Summar 50mm f/2 was still listed as “in Vorbereitung” (“in preparation”). Nevertheless, the catalogue already lists both rigid and collapsible versions, as well as chromium-plated variants in addition to the standard nickel-finished models.

This presents a somewhat different picture from the development sequence generally assumed today. It is often assumed that the Summar 50mm f/2 first appeared as a nickel-finished rigid lens, with collapsible and chromium-plated versions introduced later. However, Liste Photo Nr. 7325. shows all of these variants being presented simultaneously at the catalogue stage, even before the lens had formally entered production.

If one relies on the contemporary catalogue as a primary source, it appears that the various versions of the Summar 50mm f/2 known today were, at least in catalogue form, introduced simultaneously.

It is also noteworthy that the catalogue prominently describes the lens as “Das neue Spitzenobjektiv” (“The new flagship lens”). This suggests that Leitz positioned the Summar 50mm f/2 as a major new-generation lens within the Leica system.

1933年：初期表記と固定鏡胴・沈胴式の併存

Summar 50mm f/2については、確認できる範囲で最初にカタログ掲載された内容を、できるだけ原文に近い形で転記したいと考える。このレンズが最初に掲載されたのは、1933年6月のドイツ語カタログ（Liste Photo Nr. 7325.）で、Summar 50mm f/2は、その30ページにある「Die vollständige Reihe der Leica-Objektive mit Auswechselfassung und selbsttätiger Kupplung setzt sich wie folgt zusammen:」というセクションに掲載されている。

説明文は以下の通りである。「„SUMMAR“ 5 cm 1 : 2 (in Vorbereitung) Ultra-lichtstarkes Universal-Objektiv, für jede Art von Kunstlicht- und Reportagephotographie ebenso hervorragend geeignet wie für die allgemeine Amateurphotographie, 」。これは「ズマール 5cm F2（発売準備中）。大口径万能レンズ。あらゆる人工光撮影および報道写真に極めて優れ、一般アマチュア写真にも同様に優れた性能を示す」という内容である。そして、この説明分の下に次のように商品が並べられている。

「Fassung nicht versenkbar.」は固定鏡胴、「Fassung versenkbar.」は沈胴式を意味する。また「Verchromt」はクローム仕上げを示している。

1933年6月の時点で、Summar 50mm f/2はまだ「in Vorbereitung（発売準備中）」の状態であった。しかしカタログには、固定鏡胴と沈胴式の両仕様が掲載され、さらに当時の標準仕様であるニッケル仕上げだけでなく、クローム仕上げまで用意されている。

これは現在一般に想定されているSummar 50mm f/2の発展過程とは、やや異なる印象を与える構成である。現在、多くのライカファンの間では、Summar 50mm f/2はまずニッケル仕上げの固定鏡胴型として登場し、その後に沈胴式やクローム仕上げへ発展していったと理解されていると思われる。しかし、1933年6月の『Liste Photo Nr. 7325.』では、発売準備中の段階で既に固定鏡胴・沈胴式・クローム仕上げの各仕様が並列的に掲載されている。

一次資料であるカタログに依拠するならば、現在私たちが知っているSummar 50mm f/2の各仕様は、カタログ掲載段階においては同時に提示されていたことになる。なお、カタログには比較的大きな文字で「Das neue Spitzenobjektiv」と記されている。これは「新しい最高峰レンズ」という意味であり、ライツがSummar 50mm f/2を当時の新世代レンズとして強く位置づけていたことがわかる。

1933–1934: Emphasis on the Collapsible Mount and Parallelführung

In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7333 of August 1933, the rigid version is described as “Summar (ultra-fast lens) nicht versenkbarer Tubus”. The collapsible version is described as “Summar (ultra-fast lens) teilweise versenkbarer Tubus”.

The phrase “in Vorbereitung” (“in preparation”), which appeared in the June 1933 catalogue, is no longer present. This suggests that the lens had entered regular production by this time.

The assigned codewords for the rigid version were Sumarkup for the standard nickel-finished model and Sumarchrom for the chromium-plated model. The listed retail prices were RM 130 and RM 132 respectively.

For the collapsible version, the assigned codewords were Sumuskup for the standard nickel-finished model and Sumuschrom for the chromium-plated model. The listed retail prices were RM 155 and RM 157 respectively.

The designation “teilweise versenkbarer Tubus” may be translated as “partially collapsible barrel”.

In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7325 b. of June 1934, the lens is described as:

„SUMMAR“ 5 cm 1 : 2 Ultra-lichtstarkes Universal-Objektiv, für ungünstige Lichtverhältnisse, Kunstlicht- und Reportagephotographie ebenso hervorragend geeignet wie für die allgemeine Amateurphotographie, Fassung versenkbar, mit Parallelführung für die Leica=Farbenphotographie.

This may be translated as:

Summar 5 cm f/2. An ultra-fast universal-purpose lens, exceptionally well suited to poor lighting conditions, artificial-light photography, and reportage photography, while being equally suitable for general amateur photography. Collapsible mount, equipped with Parallelführung for Leica colour photography.

The assigned codewords were Sumus for the standard nickel-finished version and Sumus chrom for the chromium-plated version. The listed retail prices were RM 155 and RM 157 respectively.

1933–1934年：沈胴機構と Parallelführung の強調

1933年8月のドイツ語カタログ（Liste Photo Nr. 7333）では、固定鏡胴は「Summar (ultralichtstarkes Objektiv) nicht versenkbarer Tubus」と表記されている。また、沈胴式は「Summar (ultralichtstarkes Objektiv) teilweise versenkbarer Tubus」と表記されている。

1935: U.S. Catalogue and the German Catalogue Description

In the U.S. catalogue Booklet No. 1227 – 3rd Edition of March 1935, the lens is listed as “LEITZ Anastigmat SUMMAR, 50mm focus, f:2, (speed lens) in collapsible mount (chrome finish)”. The assigned codeword is SUMUS, with code number 50,360. The listed retail price was USD 109.50. This is the only entry for the Summar 50mm f/2 in this catalogue.

In the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7333 c of December 1935, the lens is listed as:

“Leitz=Summar, extremlichtstarkes Objektiv, versenkbarer Tubus mit Parallelführung”.

This may be translated as:

“Leitz=Summar. Extremely fast lens. Collapsible barrel. Equipped with Parallelführung”.

The assigned codeword is Sumus, and the listed retail price was RM 155.

In the U.S. catalogue Booklet No. 1227 – 3rd Edition of March 1935, only the chromium-finished version of the Summar 50mm f/2 is listed. In contrast, this catalogue also includes a chromium-finished version described simply as “verchromter”, in addition to the standard finish.

The assigned codeword for the chromium-finished version is Sumus chrom, and the listed retail price was RM 157.

Therefore, the standard finish in this catalogue appears to have been nickel finish.

1935年：コードナンバーの成立とクローム仕上げの整理

1935年12月のドイツ語カタログ（Liste Photo Nr. 7333 c）では「Leitz=Summar, extremlichtstarkes Objektiv, versenkbarer Tubus mit Parallelführung」と記載されている。

日本語では「Leitz=Summar。極めて大口径のレンズ。沈胴式鏡胴。平行連動機構付き」という内容である。ここでいう「Parallelführung（平行連動機構）」は、直進式ヘリコイドを指すものと考えられる。コードワードはSumus、価格は155RMである。

なお、1935年3月の米国向けカタログ（Booklet No. 1227-3rd Edition）では、Summar 50mm f/2の記載はクローム仕上げのみであったが、本カタログでは、標準仕上げとは別に「verchromter」とのみ記載されたクローム仕上げ仕様も掲載されている。クローム仕上げのコードワードはSumus chrom、価格は157RMである。したがって、本カタログにおける標準仕上げは、ニッケル仕上げであると推定できる。

1936: Standardization of the Chromium Finish

In the German catalogue Liste Photo 4 K d. of August 1936, the lens is listed as:

“Leitz-Summar 5 cm 1 : 2. Ein Universalobjektiv höchster Leistung; es ist für jede Art von Kunstlicht- und Reportagephotographie ebenso hervorragend geeignet, wie für die allgemeine Amateurphotographie. Auch bei voller Öffnung ergibt es eine hervorragende Schärfe über das gesamte Bildfeld. Bildwinkel 47°; Fassung versenkbar; Gewicht 205 g”.

This may be translated as:

“Leitz-Summar 5 cm f/2. A universal lens of the highest performance; it is equally well suited to all types of artificial-light and reportage photography, as well as general amateur photography. Even at full aperture, it delivers excellent sharpness across the entire image field. Angle of view 47°; collapsible mount; weight 205 g.”

The assigned codeword is Sumus. The price column contains the note “Wird nur noch verchromt geliefert.” This may be translated as “Now supplied only in chromium finish.”

The chromium-finished version is listed simply as “Verchromte Ausführung”. The assigned codeword is Sumus chrom, and the listed retail price was Hfl. 138.15.

1936年：クローム仕上げの標準化

1936年8月のドイツ語カタログ（Liste Photo 4 K d.）では「Leitz-Summar 5 cm 1 : 2. Ein Universalobjektiv höchster Leistung; es ist für jede Art von Kunstlicht- und Reportagephotographie ebenso hervorragend geeignet, wie für die allgemeine Amateurphotographie. The description is identical to that in the German catalogue Liste Photo Nr. 7325 g of June 1937. The assigned codeword is also Sumus chrom.

These records show that the same product specification could be assigned different codewords depending on the catalogue.

1938: Variations in Description in the U.S. Catalogue and the Possibility of a Typographical Error

In the U.S. catalogue List Photo No. 7784. of October 1938, the lens is listed as:

“LEITZ SUMMAR 50 mm focus, 1 : 2, ultra-rapid Universal lens for unfavorable lighting conditions, artificial light and press photography; also eminently suitable for all general amateur photography; in collapsible mount, chromium plated.”

The assigned codeword is Sumus, with code number 50,360. The listed retail price was USD 84.00.

The notation “1 : 2,” is reproduced exactly as printed in the original catalogue. U.S. catalogues normally use the notation “f:2”. However, only the Summar 50mm f/2 in this catalogue is described as “1 : 2,”, while the other lenses use the usual “f:” notation.

For this reason, “1 : 2,” may have been a typographical error.

1938年：米国カタログにおける表記揺れと誤植の可能性

1938年10月の米国向けカタログ（List Photo No. 7784.）では「LEITZ SUMMAR 50 mm focus, 1 : 2, ultra-rapid Universal lens for unfavorable lighting conditions, artificial light and press photography; also eminently suitable for all general amateur photography; in collapsible mount, chromium plated.」と表記されている。

これは「LEITZ SUMMAR 50mm 1:2。低照度条件、人工光撮影および報道写真のための超大口径万能レンズであり、一般アマチュア写真にも極めて適している。沈胴式鏡胴。クローム仕上げ」と言う内容である。コードワードはSumus、コードナンバーは50,360である。価格は84.00ドルである。

なお、「1 : 2, 」という表記は原文通りである。米国カタログでは通常「f:2」と表記されるが、本カタログのSummar 50mm f/2のみ「1 : 2, 」と表記され、それ以外のレンズでは「f:」表記が用いられている。このことから、「1 : 2, 」は誤植である可能性が考えられる。

1939: Final Catalogue Appearance and Change of Code Number

The final catalogue appearance of the Summar 50mm f/2 is found in the U.S. catalogue BOOKLET No. 1275 of March 1939.

The lens is listed as:

“LEITZ Anastigmat SUMMAR, 50mm focus, f :2, (super speed lens), angle of view 48°, minimum focusing distance 3.5 ft., in collapsible focusing mount.”

The assigned codeword is SUMUS, with code number 65,640. The listed retail price was USD 99.00.

1939年：最終掲載とコードナンバーの変更
