Die Linse. Monatsschrift für Photographie und Kinematographie. Sammelband mit den Heften Oktober 1931 bis Juni 1932.

I recently acquired two bound volumes of Die Linse, a German photography magazine from the prewar period. This time, I would like to share a selection of Leica advertisements from the volume containing the October 1931 through June 1932 issues. In its range of content, Die Linse seems comparable to Japanese monthly photography magazines such as Camera, published by Ars, and Asahi Camera, published by the Asahi Shimbun.

For example, the November 1931 issue includes articles and sections titled “How to Photograph Wild Animals,” “Historic Buildings in Photographs,” “An Aid to Film Projection,” “Retouching Positive Images,” “Stereoscopic Photography at Home,” “Photography ABC,” “Photography and the Law,” “Short Notices,” “New Products and Industry Reports,” “Book Reviews,” and “News from Photography Clubs.”

The lead article, “How to Photograph Wild Animals,” begins as follows. I have translated only the portion of the article visible in the first image shown here.

When an attentive amateur photographer reads the articles on animal photography that frequently appear in specialist magazines, they may admire the pictures and marvel at the photographer’s skill in taking them. Unfortunately, however, these articles, which are meant to inspire readers, often fail to explain how the photographs were made. As a result, an amateur who is unfamiliar with the lives of animals is unlikely to attempt such subjects. In this article, I shall therefore try to offer some general guidance…

The author then identifies amphibians and reptiles as relatively accessible subjects and describes his own equipment:

For almost all my animal photographs, I use a good 9 × 12 cm folding camera: an Agfa Isolar fitted with a four-element Solinar f/4.5 anastigmat. Its excellent sharpness makes it particularly well suited to this purpose. For negatives, I use Agfa Isochrom film and Agfa Isochrom plates…

In Every Situation

the “LEICA” is the ideal camera. Landscapes, portraits, reproductions—the “LEICA” captures them all superbly. During his flight over Africa, the aerobatic pilot Ernst Udet hung a Leica from the wing of his aircraft. Despite this unusual camera position, what remarkable pictures he obtained! The SMALL LEICA IMAGE can be enlarged quickly and easily to any desired size. Modern, FINE-GRAINED film with high orthochromatic sensitivity and high speed permits enlargement to any size, while saving you a great deal of money on photographic materials.

The “Leica” Does It!

The “LEICA” is always reliable! Interchangeable lenses and the ability to take stereo and telephoto photographs give you countless photographic possibilities that would otherwise require several cameras.
