Information on Leica serial numbers is abundant online, and standard references like the Leica Pocket Book are readily available. However, I felt a strong urge to transcribe data from a completely different paper source in my personal collection. After observing eBay listings for months, I finally acquired a document accompanied by a serial number list at an affordable price. The item itself was likely an official “Authorized Dealer Catalogue” or “Franchised Dealer Catalogue.” I am currently digitizing the list and adding the transcribed data, as it becomes available, to Leica Serial Numbers from a Source of Uncertain Provenance.
As noted on the linked page, this document has several unique characteristics: it is printed on U.S. legal-size paper (approx. 35.5 × 21.6 cm), and it is riddled with typographical errors and inconsistent notation. Unlike the A4 size common in Europe and Asia, legal-size paper was historically preferred in North America for legal and official documents. The cream-colored, thick paper gives it a premium feel. Since there are no text indentations on the back, it appears to be a copy rather than a direct typewriter original. The errors are extensive: for instance, despite a clear note stating “St=Standard,” the Leica Standard model is labeled inconsistently as “St,” “Standard,” “Stand.,” “I Stand.,” and “I St.” Furthermore, the serial numbers overlap; the entry “5434-5700 I 1928” is immediately followed by “5700-6300 Compur 1926-29,” duplicating the number 5700. Most notably, a massive block of 25 consecutive rows is duplicated entirely.
I imagine a scene from around 1960 in a North American dealer office. The original list from Leitz Germany (Liste der Leica – Fabrikationsnummern) arrived in A4 format. A supervisor instructed a typist to retype the list onto standard U.S. legal-size paper. Amidst the endless sea of monotonous digits—or perhaps due to post-lunch drowsiness—the typist made numerous typos and repeated entire sections. Unnoticed by both the supervisor and the typist, it was filed away as a master copy for duplication. Interestingly, these glaring errors are almost entirely confined to “Blatt 1” (Sheet 1). From Sheet 2 onward, the errors drop drastically, and the typewriter font changes, suggesting that multiple typists may have divided the work.
Standard lookup tools based on the Leica Pocket Book are flawless and perfectly suited for anyone looking to check a specific production year. Yet, this error-filled document carries a very human story. Despite its flaws, it felt wrong to let it fade into obscurity. The literal process of transcribing this by hand is incredibly time-consuming, and I often questioned whether this list was truly worth preserving. However, my ultimate hope is that Leica enthusiasts worldwide look at this far-from-perfect document and appreciate it as a living piece of Leica’s history. Flawless lists already exist everywhere. That is precisely why I want to preserve this slightly flawed, imperfect paper record—complete with all its human imperfections.
ライカのシリアルナンバーリスト、これはネットで探せばいくらでも情報があります。ライカポケットブックのような書籍を頼りにすることもできます。ただ、筆者としては「そのどれでもない紙の資料」から、新たにデータを起こしたいという欲求が湧いてきてしまいました。そのため、eBayを数ヶ月にわたって観察し続け、あるとき、手の届く価格でシリアルナンバーリストが添付されている資料を購入しました。商品自体は「Authorized Dealer Catalogue」もしくは「Franchised Dealer Catalogue」だったと思います。そして、現在、その資料を使ってシリアルナンバーリストを作成し、出来たところから、Leica Serial Numbers from a Source of Uncertain Provenance にデータを追加しているところです。
リンク先のページにもこの資料のことは書き記しましたが、特徴をいくつか挙げると、紙のサイズがリーガルサイズであること、そして誤字や表記の揺れがあまりに多いことです。リーガルサイズとは主に北米で利用されてきた紙のサイズで、公文書や法的文書を作成する際に用いられてきたそうです。実測で縦35.5cm、横21.6cmで、日本でよく用いられているA4（縦29.7cm、横21cm）と比べると縦がかなり長く感じます。用紙は薄いクリーム色で厚みもあり、文書用の紙としては高級感があります。紙の裏側に文字の凹凸が無いため、タイプライターで打たれた原稿ではなく、コピーであることは間違いありません。誤字や表記の揺れについては全てを指摘することはしませんが、例えば、ライカスタンダードの表記はデータの欄外に「St=Standard」と注意書きがあるにも関わらず「St」、「Standard」、「Stand.」、「I Stand.」、「I St」といくつもの表記が見られます。またシリアルナンバーにも間違いがあり、「5434-5700 I 1928」の次の行が「5700-6300 Compur 1926-29」となっており、5700が重複しています。また「158301-158350 St 1935」から「159676-160325 IIIa 1935」までの25行が全て重複し、繰り返し入力されています。
1960年頃、北米のある都市の事務所において、ライツ本社から送られてきたシリアルナンバーリスト、すなわち「Liste der Leica – Fabrikationsnummern (Angabe des Modells und des Baujahres)」がA4サイズであったため、上司の指示により、タイピストがリーガルサイズへの転記を行った。しかし、同じような数字の羅列ゆえか、もしくは昼食後の眠気のゆえか、打ち間違いや繰り返し入力をしてしまった。上司もタイピストも間違いに気づかず、コピー用原版として、そのままファイルに綴じてしまった。そのようなことがあったのではないかと想像します。ちなみに、打ち間違いのほとんどは「Blatt 1」と書かれた1枚目に集中しています。2枚目からは間違いは大きく減ったとともに、文字のフォントも変わりました。もしかしたら、何人かのタイピストが分担して転記していたのかもしれません。
インターネットでライカのシリアルナンバーを調べると、おそらくライカポケットブック由来と思われるデータがいくらでも探せます。それらは正確で、私の手元にあるもののように、表記の揺れやデータの重複はありません。自分の持っているライカの製造年を知りたい、そういうごくスタンダードな要望に対しては、それらの正確なデータで調べるのがいいでしょう。しかし、この間違いだらけの資料には人間臭いストーリーを感じてしまい、多くの瑕疵があったとしても、それがゆえにお蔵入りにするのは惜しいと思いました。正直にいうと、資料の転記にはかなりの時間を要することから、何度も「これは世に残すべきものか」と考えました。ただ、世界中のライカ好きの人たちが、この完璧からは程遠い資料をみて、これもライカの歴史の一部なんだと感じていただけたら嬉しいなと思います。正確なシリアルナンバーリストは、すでに世の中にいくつもあります。だからこそ私は、そのどれでもない、この少し不完全な紙の資料を、その不完全さも含めて残しておきたいと思います。
